Crossing Miami Canal. US Sugar's newly restored 4-6-2 #148 takes a cut of cane cars compass east, across the Miami Canal, headed toward the little town of Okeelanta, FL. Among the various sugar producers that operate in Central Florida, United States Sugar is unique in that it is the only one that has its own railroad....over 170 miles ot track...and transports all of it's cane harvest from field to mill using that railroad. Although the cane trains are typically powered by diesel electric locomotive these days, the company does occasionally put the 148 on a no-kidding cane run, mostly for public relations purposes. The train see here is a special photo charter, that was organized by Trains Magazine, and was the first such photo shoot done with the 148 since it was restored.
