A trio of Santa Maria Valley Railroad locomotives have cut off the train the brought from Santa Maria and are positioning themselves to pick up cars from the Union Sugar Beet plant in Betteravia. The three locomotives, all built by General Electric; are SMV 70 Ton 80 (ex-locomotive dealer IREX 401; ex-Chicago & North Western 401; née-Fort Dodge, Des Moines & Southern 401), U6B 60 (built in May 1959 and reportedly the only U6B sold to an American railroad) and 70 Ton 70 (ex-IREX 411, ex-CNW 411, ex-FDDM 411; née-Arkansas & Ozarks 900). SMV U6B 60 was rarely used on the point of a train, as the cab was cramped when compared to the standard 70 Ton locomotives. (Guadalupe, California – May 14, 1981)
