On January 7th, 2023 the Mass Bay Rail Enthusiasts chartered a special train on the Conway Scenic Railroad. The trip featured the matching Boston & Maine 1949 F7As owned by the 470 Railroad Club. After a very successful day, we were deciding on our last photo location. The Winter shadows were getting long and we initially decided on an open, but unremarkable spot. When we arrived there it occurred to me that the top of the hill in Intervale may still have usable light, but it would be a risk. We relocated and got into position just as the 1949 products of LaGrange smoked up the grade with their six-car train. The peak of 6,288 foot Mount Washington can be seen poking through the clouds. This was an iconic spot on the Mountain Subdivision and remains a favorite for railfans today. Photographer Wayne Allen captured the Maine Central 252 at this spot leading the last regular freight that graced these rails. Today 252 is owned by the Conway Scenic Railroad and can be seen at the bottom of the hill following the train back after leading the consist West earlier in the day.
