| Conrail XNS-114 appears out of "the hole" (former Lehigh Valley main from Bethlehem and points east) and crosses over from track 2 to 1 at CP Burn. The XNS symbol was used for empty coal trains returning to mines served by Norfolk Southern. This train most likely originated at a generating station along the River Line in New York state. In the distance the East Penn Drill, WPAL-13, waits for XNS to pass before continuing west on the Reading Line. The matched pair of Conrail SD40-2s was considered monotonous at the time, but today they'd be welcome sight on any road train. The gasometer in the distance was a local landmark for decades. The 1928-built storage tank sat unused for more years than it was in service and was finally razed in 2003. |
