| The first light of the last day of 2020 sets an eastbound Union Pacific coal train aglow as it crosses the BNSF at Fremont, NE. This was most likely the last Union Pacific coal train destined for the Omaha Public Power District generating station in Nebraska City as the BNSF won the contract to begin delivery on January 1, 2021. The BNSF originally held the contract for this business until the 2000's when it was awarded to UP. The shift back to BNSF would necessitate the re-opening of a branch line between Lincoln and Nebraska City. This hasn't been without some challenges, as BNSF has subsequently suffered a few derailments on the line. |
