MILW 101A leads another FP7, E9B & E9A on the Morning Hiawatha as the train glides downgrade and crosses BN's main on the approach to the Mississippi River crossing into Hastings, MN. The train has a week to survive before being taken over and dropped by Amtrak on May 1, 1971. The MILW line will still be part of Amtrak's Empire Builder route to Chicago leaving BN freight only between St. Paul & Chicago. The Hastings Mississippi bridge is the last one crossing the river within one state until the river reaches Louisiana. MILW/BN shared both mains between Newport, MN & St. Croix Tower. BN's line is the one closer to the river. CP/BNSF & Amtrak still operate this way.
