SP 9 makes the last steam run on the SP narrow gauge, from Owenyo to Keeler and return. It was retained as a backup for the single diesel on the line, and that morning the diesel returned on a (standard gauge) flatcar after repairs at the Bakersfield shops. Fortunately No. 9 would be used one last time while the diesel was set up for service. A few months later, in April 1960, the narrow gauge was abandoned.
