West-Of-Hudson Services. New York is well represented in Lyndhurst, New Jersey on April 8, 2021 as MTA Metro-North Railroad GP40FH-2 4904 (CRIP 372, GP40, 12/1966) and F40PH-3C 4908 (née-AMTK 382, F40PHR, 7/1981) come together near Disposal Road with the Upper Hack Lift Bridge and the Freedom Tower in the background. When New York State began to subsidize the commuter operations west of the Hudson River, it initially paid New Jersey DOT to supply all of the equipment. The decision was ultimately made to purchase its own equipment, and the current fleet now boasts 15 EMD locomotives and 65 Alstom built Comet V cars that are pooled with NJ Transit equipment to provide service on the Port Jervis and Pascack Valley Lines.
Two rapid transit lines, PATCO and PATH, take commuters to Philadelphia and New York, respectively. Metro North locomotives and rolling stock often show up on NJ Transit northern lines and SEPTA terminates routes in Trenton and West Trenton.
