Northern Pacific Railway FTA 5401A, built by Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC) in March 1944 as NP 6001A, was photographed in Sumas WA along with an FTB, a GP7 and another A-B set of FTs. Sumas is the border between Washington, in the United States, and Abbotsford, British Columbia, in Canada. By 1948 the NP had replaced the original side-mount numberboards with larger numberboards placed at a 45o angle for improved visibility. NP's FTs were renumbered from the 6000s to the 5400s in December 1949 to January 1950. The large lift rings on the nose were added around 1952, and in 1960 the NP added a twin-sealed beam headlight to the A-unit's nose door, replacing the reflective road number that used to be placed there (the mounting bolts of which are still visible).
