While ordering more 211 Series trains, JR Central also modified the design and developed the 311 Series. Entered service in 1989, these trains operate the New Rapid Service on Tokaido Main Line, which launched in the same year. But their role was soon replaced by the new 313 Series. These 311 Series mainly serve the local services nowadays.
