With the track gang just tied up for the day, the line is now clear for E199 to continue its journey to Sylacauga, AL with 49 cars in trail for the Imerys plant. Leading are 4 of G&W's "newish" 3500-series GP38-2s, which are refurbished from mostly former lease fleet units returned by Class 1s, Union Pacific in particular. G&W has acquired nearly 100 of these units, relegating many older first generation EMD units surplus. The EARY is presently undergoing a significant tie replacement program being carried out by a smaller rail contractor that uses some older equipment not often seen on the larger Class 1 railroad track production teams that are commonplace now.
Photos taken in the Deep South--primarily Alabama and Georgia--from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Featured railroads include the ICG, the West Point Route, SCL, Southern, Frisco, and even KCS.
