    Remarks & Notes
Prior to gaining fame as a heritage unit, NJ Transit 4101 was just another weathered commuter locomotive. Here it was in charge of a late afternoon westbound on the Bergen County Line at Garfield. In the mid-1980s NJ Transit replaced the steam generators in their GP40Ps with head end power units, and they were re-designated from GP40P to GP40PH. In a few years 4101 would be extensively rebuilt as a GP40PH-2.
