| Another favorite railroad has passed into the history books. As 2023 draws to a close so does the lease of the old Northern Pacific mainline through the Rockies by Montana Rail Link. One of the neat aspects of the MRL was the early reliance upon 20 cylinder SD45 locomotives. Time slowly caught up to the burly EMD fleet as they were displaced by batches of SD70ACes. Ultimately one SD45 soldiered on right up to the end. I was very happy to find 355 out on the mainline during my last visit, powering a MOW train including a diesel-electric crane picking up scrap along the 3rd Sub. The pride employees took in their railroad is evident in the condition of this nearly 52 year old locomotive. Like the MRL itself, it had a great run. |
