Heading to Los Angeles, Southern Pacific GS-4 4449 makes a service stop in Tehachapi after climbing out of the San Joaquin Valley. The low sun this morning creates a mood similar to a plein air painting, complimenting the age of this steam locomotive (built by Lima forty years earlier, in May 1941), along with warm colors that complement this Northern's Daylight colors. Steam locomotives required frequent service stops, primarily to lubricate their many moving parts, particularly in these post-steam days, as the hosting railroads want to avoid any delays to the freight trains from which they derive their income.
