The Last Of its Kind In North America Is For Sale. Pennsylvania Northeastern C39-8 8212 (ex-Norfolk Southern 8212, exx-Conrail 6021) was still active daily on the Pennsylvania Northeastern Railroad when it was seen laying over in Lansdale, Pennsylvania on the night of Saturday, May 18, 2019. Last used in early 2023, the railroad recently placed the now unique locomotive up for sale. Of the 161 C39-8 locomotives built by General Electric, this is the only one in North American that is in tact. Of the others produced - Norfolk Southern keeps NS 8688 at its Juniata Locomotive Shop in Altoona, Pennsylvania as the platform for a test bed for repaired engines and a handful are in Peru; the rest have been scrapped.
