During the night of August 18, 2024, heavy rainstorms triggered historic flooding across western Connecticut. As a precaution, the cities of Ansonia and Derby activated their "Local Protection" systems, including the closure of four swing-style gates over the CTDOT/Metro-North Railroad Waterbury Branch. These gates shield the cities from the rising waters of the Naugatuck and Housatonic Rivers. Pictured here is the closed flood gate at Derby-Shelton Station, captured as the tail end of the storms passed in the early hours of August 19th.
