Coming Out Of Hibernation. A post about a Mohawk by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society and a "special announcement" today by the National New York Central Railroad Museum can only lead the mind to wander. New York Central 3001 (Alco #69338, 4-8-2, 1940) is the largest surviving NYC's steam locomotive and the only surviving L-3a class Mohawk. Retired in 1957, it made its way through a variety of museums before landing in Elkhart, Indiana in the 1980s where it has been on display. In 2022, the Fort Wayne organization purchased seven former New York Central Empire Budd coaches from the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum, and they are presently under restoration. It would seem that we will all have to tune in to find out.
