Amtrak acquired 12 ex Penn Central, nee New Haven, FL9s from Conrail in 1976. Over two and one half years later, Amtrak 487 was still in its MTA/Penn Central scheme. Amtrak 489 behind it was in Amtrak Phase II paint. Both units are seen here after having pulled the Niagara Rainbow from Grand Central Terminal to Croton-Harmon, where they are being swapped for an F40PH that will bring the train the rest of the way.
