Having just passed the Marfa Lights viewing platform, UP 5831 navigates the S-curve that marks beginning of the eastbound climb over Paisano Pass, halfway between Marfa and Alpine TX. Paisano Pass isn't a terribly steep grade (about 1%), but the pass does represent the highest railroad point in the state of Texas, at 5074 feet, just shy of a mile high.
