Amtrak At 54. When the National Rail Passenger Corporation started to operate trains on May 1, 1971, you could have won a lot of money on a bet that 54 years later, Amtrak would still exist in any form. Amtrak P42DC 108 was painted in a special Phase VI paint scheme for the railroad's 50th Anniversary, and was leading Train 68 (Adirondack) over the Hudson River Near Rogers Island in Fort Edward, New York, on the afternoon of April 27, 2025. The Delaware & Hudson Railroad discontinued this train in 1971, but it returned in 1974 as part of the Empire Service that was subsidized by New York State. Though it has seen some extended outages, it currently operates round-trip daily between New York City and Montreal.
