Coal At The Cove. CSX C731-04 was passing through Tompkins Cove in Stony Point, New York on the rainy afternoon of Tuesday, May 6, 2025 with CSXT 7001 as the outward-facing rear DPU. A change in CSX's routing has brought unit coal trains to New York as a regular sight for the first time in decades as part of the detours around Baltimore to accommodate tunnel work, CSX C748/E748 (Newell, PA-Baltimore, MD). While a few loaded coal trains have passed through here during temporary reroutings in recent years, it has been decades since they were a regular sight in this area. The curve provides a nice view of the train as it heads toward North Bergen, New Jersey for its next recrew.
