The special train for the SERVRAIL Group from Switzerland, traveling on the impressive mountain railway in Montenegro with electric locomotive 461 # 029 and two passenger cars, is about to pass through a short tunnel and then cross the Mala Rijeka viaduct, which is almost 500 meters long and 198 meters high. This is the highest railway bridge in Europe and was built between 1969 and 1973. The beam bridge has a continuous girder with five spans as a static system in the longitudinal direction, with spans of 81.2 m, 92.8 m, 150.8 m, 92.8 m, and 81.2 m. Except for one end span, the bridge is straight.
The 2,650-ton superstructure is a steel truss box girder. It consists of two 12-meter-high diamond trusses spaced 6.5 meters apart with parallel upper and lower chords connected by wind bracing. The track runs inside the box girder above the lower wind bracing.
The piers, up to 137 meter high, are founded on rock, with 8,000 m3 of concrete required for each foundation. The piers were constructed using slipform, and the superstructure was built using the cantilever method.
