The long viaduct along the face of Richmond allowed the C&O to close a troublesome tunnel underneath the city. Apparently, in an attempt to reopen this tunnel in the 1920s, a collapse trapped an entire work train, crew and 4-4-0 included, inside. Hundreds of birds look on from their perches in the James River as coal loads roll east.
