Four men who unload coal by hand put down their shovels and head to lunch at Huanan, a city of over 100,000 in China's far northeastern Heilongjiang province. The trains on the 30-in. gauge railway are eight cars long, and each car holds 15 tons of coal. For their manual labor, they earn $1.25 (U.S.) per 10-hour day.
