On a gorgeous Saturday afternoon a company work train heads south to shuffle some cars at Portage and set up equipment for next week's work on the south end of the ARR. Leading the way is a sparkling GP that was bought new by the ARR in 1976 and still looks resplendent in its original black and yellow paint. While this location looks rather peaceful today, Kern is one of the most active and most dangerous avalanche zones on the ARR system and is always an area of heightened concern come later winter.
Coal and steel don't go bad. This album features long, slow, heavy freight trains; drag freights, slop freights, dead freights, etc. Trains with lots of power, and lots of different cargo slogging along behind.
