Remarks & Notes

The Rocket:??Built in London, Enland by Braithwaite & Co., and delivered to the Port of Philadelphia in 1838, this historic engine was in use through 1879 and logged 310,164 miles. From the Museum's plaque: "Named after the famous Stephenson's Rocket, this hard working little locomotive pulled passengers for more then 40 years over 300,000 miles. It was one of seven built for the READING RAILROAD but is the only one that remains." Although it looks like an 0-4-0, two cylinders beneath the smokebox are connected to cranks on the rear axle. Therefore it is actually a 2-2-0.
