The Movie Queen blows off steam. Railtown Engineer George Sapp watches carefully as Sierra #3's Fireman (on the walkway in front of the cab) lifts the blow-down valve, unleashing 160 psi of boiler pressure to the atmosphere. Instantly, 300 degree-plus, superheated water flashes to steam in a roaring blast that can be heard for blocks. During the process, George alternates his gaze between the plume below and the water and steam pressure gages in the cab to ensure that they stay within proper limits. The procedure is performed several times daily and is meant to clear the boiler's mudring of sediment. Were it not for the fact that it completely soaks anything nearby, a locomotive blow-down would make an excellent leaf-blower!
