      Remarks & Notes
Narrow gauge 65 tonner #174 is a former US Navy locomotive who served her entire career on Oahu. Built in April 1945 she and two sisters were the largest diesel locomotives ever used in Hawaii. She was MU equipped and after the after the OR&L mainline was shut down in 1947 she served for another 21 years running between Pearl Harbor and the Navy's Ammunition Depot at Laulaulei east of Nanakuli on 12 miles of former OR&L mainline. In fact, this particular locomotive hauled the very last ammunition train to West Loch on September 18, 1968 delivering 16" rounds to the USS New Jersey, an Iowa class battleship that was enroute to Vietnam. When the Navy shut down their rail operations in 1968 this locomotive and much other rail equipment formed the backbone of the newly established Hawaiian Railway Society after being donated by the Navy in 1975. Behind the unit are two steel bodied ex US Navy boxcars that the OR&L bought in 1959. The middle car is a 1916 vintage wooden original OR&L car, one of very view that survives today.
