    Remarks & Notes
The Hawaiian Railway Society's 3 PM Sunday excursion is just departing from the halfway point of its out and back run. This location is MP 24.6 (from Honolulu) on the former OR&L and just over 7 miles from the Hawaiian Railway Society's museum yard in Ewa. Since there is no run around at the end of the line the train shoves out from Ewa and then this little unit leads on the return trip. The locomotive is a 45 tonner #423 built for the US Navy in January 1945. After the OR&L mainline was shut down in 1947 she and two sisters served for another 21 years running between Pearl Harbor and the Navy's Ammunition Depot at Laulaulei east of Nanakuli on 12 miles of former OR&L mainline (these very tracks). When the Navy shut down their rail operations in 1968 this locomotive and much other rail equipment formed the backbone of the newly established Hawaiian Railway Society after being donated by the Navy in 1975. The excursion train consists of 5 home built open air cars built from ex US Army flat cars of 1943 vintage. Not quite visible on the rear is the museum's pride and joy, Parlor Car #64 built in 1901 for railroad president Benjamin Dillingham. The bridge the train is traversing was restored in 2001 allowing a slightly longer journey. Behind the train is the rugged bulwark of the Wai'anae Mountain Range while to the left can be seen the Electric Beach the beautiful blue Pacific.
