| The climb begins. The old D&RGW Silverton Branch runs on relatively level ground from Durango to Hermosa Colorado. After the Route 550 Crossing however, things change pretty dramatically. The 6.5 mile stretch from Hermosa to Rockwood is a 2.5% grade and gives the locomotives a pretty healthy workout. This view shows the mixed consist of the Durango & Silverton's annual Winter Photo Train as she begins to climb that hill in the early morning sun. A fresh blanket of snow, a cold, white exhaust plume and some left-over low clouds made for a pretty winter scene on this Sunday morning. |
