      138 years after the invention of the Janney coupler, two updated versions of its revolutionary design continue to keep cars connected and enhance the safety of railroading by preventing accidental puncture of tank cars during derailments. The tank car on the left has the Type E upper and lower shelf coupler while on the right is the Type F “tight lock” coupler.
