Williamsport, MD 4/1/2010 - The northbound Winchester & Western turn out of Corning, WV is crossing the Potomac River near Williamsport on its way to Hagerstown, MD with loads of sand and other commodities. Accessible only via a long hike along the C&O Canal, the impressive high bridge demonstrates the enduring infrastructure of the line's original builder, the Pennsylvania Railroad. Never a busy line, the former PRR Winchester Secondary track was bought by the Winchester & Western from Conrail in the mid 1980s, and today sees one train per day each direction, this morning passing just after 11:00 a.m. The Black River SD-9 was a leased engine, being tested by the W&W in the spring of 2010 for possible purchase, a decision that was never made, and the locomotive returned home later that year.
