    Remarks & Notes
The narrow gauge line to Esquel runs through a vast and lonely landscape for much of its route. It is very much like the Carson and Colorado which was once described as being built 200 miles too far or 200 years too soon. The line was made modestly famous by Theroux's book entitled "The Old Patagonian Express". Made redundant by air service and improved roads, it survives for tourists and the occasional railfan as an Argentine national monument to the pioneers of Patagonia. This was a Farrails photo charter.

The narrow gauge line to Esquel, Argentina, variously known as La Trochita, The Old Patagonian Express, or just the Esquel line, linked the remote villages of southern Patagonia with the outside world. It is amazing that the line still exists.
