Leaf Peepers. Peak fall colors grace the lower slopes of New Hampshire's White Mountains as MWRC #10 "Kroflite" takes the B-section of the 11 AM train up Cold Spring Hill. Seated on the front platform, the train's brakeman intently watches the track, the cog rail in particular, for any foreign objects or damage. While The Cog is a popular attraction during its entire operating season, patronage peaks during the first two weeks in October, when the fall colors are the brightest. The Cog takes reservations, sometimes weeks in advance for these trains, and it is common to add second sections to hourly trains. On this particular weekend, there were two sections on every hourly train, and the railway had 5 steam engines and 1 diesel-hydraulic working the hill. One spare steam engine was also hot, in case problems developed in any of the other locomotives.
