Southern Steel With the opening of its rail mill at the Ensley, Alabama steel works in 1902, the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company would start the production of rail for the first time in the history of the South. TCI as it was known would soon be taken over by the giant U.S. Steel organization on November 1, 1907 but would keep rolling rail under the markings of “Tennessee – USA”. Rail production would cease in May of 1981 when the famous Ensley Works blast furnaces were shut down for good.
