Electric cogwheel railcar Bhe 1/2 # 28 on a grade of about 48 % in the "Eselwand" (donkey wall) on the way up to Pilatus Kulm. The Pilatus Railway is the world's steepest cogwheel railway with the unique Locher (Ing. Eduard Locher 1840-1910) system, based on a horzontal grip. The so called "herring bone" cograil, gripped on both sides by two horizontal cogwheels. Guideplates mounted below the cogwheels prevent dislodgement and at the same time regulate the movement of the vehicle on the track. Rails and cograil date still from the inauguration of the line in 1889!
