Taking aim. Sumpter Valley Fireman Chuck Turner carefully studies his fire, looking for obvious gaps where the draft may be sucking in cold air. It is there that he will aim to accurately toss the log that he currently holds. After closing the fire-door briefly to retrieve another log from the bunker behind him, the process will repeat itself again in about 30 seconds. As with a coal-burner, Chuck reports that there is a definite pattern to firing Heisler #3. Any failure to pay attention to keeping that fire even across the grates will not only affect the steaming performance of this engine, but could result in shortening the life of some boiler components such as the firebox sheets. Viewers may note that the Engineer on the other side of the cab is facing the rear of the train. At the time of this photo, Heisler #3 was in the process of shoving its train backward toward the nearby depot at Sumpter.
