Union Pacific 844 has been restored and painted back to its original paint scheme while it enjoys its retirement working leisure weekends on the Nevada Southern Railway, a short tourist line running on the trackage from Boulder City, NV to the grade crossing for Route 93/95. This is the original GP30 844 that made Union Pacific have to renumber the truly original 4-8-4 844 to 8444 when the then new diesel arrived in the roster. When the GP30 retired years later, Union Pacific renumbered the proud Northern "back" to its "old" number since it ironically outlived the diesel because of its own starring role in Union Pacific's steam program. Also of note is that the track the train runs on is a small part of the original alignment of the Boulder City Branch that ran from the Union Pacific mainline in Las Vegas, through Henderson, NV to Bouder City, NV and was used to transport supplies and large parts to the Hoover Dam Project.
