The drawbridge over the Columbia River, separating the states of Washington and Oregon, was built by the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway in 1908. This swing type bridge was the first of its kind to be built over the Columbia River, and the first bridge built over the lower Columbia River. At just over 1/2 mile long, the 2,807 foot long bridge has been used for freight and passenger traffic running north and southbound on the Fallbridge subdivision. The bridge's longest span- 467 feet swings east to let river traffic through. River traffic should contact the bridge on VHF channel 13 to let the tender know when to open the bridge. The steel for this bridge was cast by American Bridge Co. of New York, and construction took approximately 26 months.
