            Remarks & Notes
At the 1990 NRHS Convention in St. Louis, TRAINS Magazine had a special and private photo staged in the afternoon where all four participating steam locomotives would be lined up for its staffers. After that session, the UP 844 would head over to Chouteau Avenue for the night. While on the yard track the rear wheel of the centipede tender truck dropped into the gauge. This was about dinner time as the rain clouds began to gather. Soon the clouds turned green with water and got very dark, and it rained. Hard. Meanwhile, the local engine Frisco 4-8-2 1522 was summoned to help rerail, in case the 844 had trouble on the slippery, wet rails. After the rain waned as the storm floated east, the lightning was everywhere. The picture was tougher to compose than it looks -- street lights were everywhere and at the height of the locomotive, so hiding those while catching the glint to give the engines shape and hoping for lightning behind them would have been nice. These were film days, remember, and Kodachrome could take days to process once we got home. I didn't see the images for nearly a week, and this was among 15 rolls of images of the four engines -- UP 844, Frisco 1522, N&W 2-6-6-4 1218 and Cotton Belt 4-8-4 819.

A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)

Pictures of things often unseen in the world of railroading. Interesting equipment, operations, and people that help the railroad go around.
