On the 72nd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Amtrak P42DC 42, painted to commemorate America's military veterans, leads train #573 as it departs the station in Anaheim, California. The first four cars are privately owned and beautifully restored vintage railcars full of World War II veterans and their families. Private cars carry veterans on the Pacific Surfliners every year, and the venerable old cars feature 1940s USO themes inside, from the music played to car attendants wearing vintage clothing. Dubbed the “troop train,” this train set will make two Los Angeles to San Diego round-trips today. (The private varnish are Vista Dome-Lounge-Dining Car "Silver Splendor" [ex-CB&Q "Silver Buckle], 39 seat Club-Lounge "Overland Trail” [ex-SP 2981 "Overland Trail"], Dormitory-Lounge "Acoma" [ex-ATSF 1370 "Acoma"] and 3 Bedroom-Drawing Room-Buffet-Lounge "Colonial Crafts" [ex-PRR "Colonial Crafts"].) In the distance can be seen the skeletal framework for ARTIC, the new Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (http://www.articinfo.com/), which will serve at the Amtrak and Metrolink station, as well as buses and, if it ever happens, the Golden State’s bullet train.
