Dashing through the snow. The Wilmington & Western Railroad's 1909-vintage 4-4-0 leads a 2011 Lerro Productions Charter across the snow-covered Bridge 10A and into the line's Mt. Cuba Picnic Grove. This bridge is one of 9 that span the Red Clay Creek on the old B&O Landenberg Branch that is now the Wilmington & Western. In 2003, 7 of the 9 were either severely damaged or destroyed by floods in the wake of Tropical Storm Henri, leaving the railroad with just a couple of miles of usable track. It took a four-year design and construction effort, facilitated by private fund-raising and grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to replace the destroyed wooden trestles with modern steel structures like the one you see here, but in 2007, the Wilmington & Western Railroad was able to resume steam excursions over their entire line from Greenbank to Hockessin.
