Three levels down in the bowels of Grand Central Terminal in New York City, there is a huge barrel vaulted space that welcomes and discharges No. 7 trains. Clattering out of the East River Tunnel from Queens, pushing tunnel air ahead of it like a piston, one such train slows for it's first stop in Manhattan about 9 PM one spring night.
