Remarks & Notes

A former Grainbelt covered hopper damaged in a derailment several years ago now serves as an overhead feed bin on a farm West of Ringwood, OK. A closer inspection of what seems to be an otherwise run of the mill ACF Centerflow hopper reveals it to be a converted Santa Fe Conditionaire covered hopper. One hundred of the cars were built for the Santa Fe in 1972 to provide temperature controlled transport of potatoes, carrots, and citrus. The cars, covered in orange painted foam and sporting mechanical refrigeration units, were an attempt to capture a portion of the bulk perishable commodity market. The program was deemed a failure within a few years and the cars were stripped of the refrigeration units and converted for grain handling.
