One of the massive plans of the ‘Rail Gen 2.0’ project was to introduce new generation trains for the urban lines with upgraded signaling systems. In 2015, MTR awarded the manufacture of the new fleet to CRRC Qingdao. As the progression of delivering the new signaling system was under severe delay, MTR decided to have several new trains installed with the existing SACEM system. These trains arrived in Hong Kong in 2022 and entered service soon after completing testing.
