    Remarks & Notes
A certain Southern gentleman who we all know and love has delighted us by showing his beloved L&N in wonderfully sylvan settings. Well, y'all, I wish to present a grittier 1993 vintage view of railroading. Here you see the Long Island Railroad's Long Island City Yard where the diesel trains that cannot travel into the East River Tunnels into Penn Station lay up. On this overcast damp day, even the exhilarating Empire State building is hidden in the fog next to the smoke stack. Being 1993, this LIRR facility had not yet received any money for renovation. Thus there is spongy, nausea inducing track, with automobiles too close and trash everywhere. This bespeaks of a yard that had not yet shaken off the diaspora brought upon it by the railroad woes of post WWII America. However, there was one great advantage for the railfan. Back then there was no policeman or pompadourian tool with a clip board to chase you away. Such is not the case today. Just ask the inimitable Dave Honan and what happened to us once on a visit. For a view of today's yard please visit HERE.
