Remarks & Notes

Aptly named... Railfans of the MRL have been known to call the MRL 290 by its nickname, of "Flat-Back". The 290 began its life in May of 1966 as the GN 321, and eventually made its way to NP rails with the MRL. The steam generator is removed but the well known rear flank of the 290 remains, and is the reason for its nickname.

The 290 hustles a lone ballast load and caboose up the 2.2% grade of Mullan Pass, after performing work train service at Skyline and dropping cars off in Helena. A long hood forward SDP40 in 2014 with a caboose on mountain grades, who'da thunk?
