Eastbound at Fourth Iron. The Conway Scenic Railroad's Canadian National Switcher #7470 rolls off the 109 year-old "4th Iron" bridge on the Sawyer River, hauling the 8th annual "Steam in the Snow" excursion for the Massachusetts Bay Railroad Enthusiasts (MBRRE). This event is typically conducted on the first Saturday in January, and offers railfans an opportunity to ride behind and photograph the steam engine on the old Maine Central Mountain Division from just below Crawford's Notch, all the way to the railroad's base of operations in North Conway. Although there have been years when there was no snow on the ground for this event, the past several years have featured more than enough of the white stuff. Fortunately, the temperatures for this years event, were a little more bearable than in 2014, when it was -15F as the excursion got underway. This year, it was a balmy 11F. Sadly, at the end of this particular service day, 7470's Form 4 extension was due to expire, so this was likely the last "Steam in the Snow" we'll see on the Conway Scenic, for at least a couple of years.
