Restored to service in 1991 (after a five-year rebuild), Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751 operated on quite a few trips (Los Angeles to Bakersfield, L.A. to Chicago, L.A. to Sacramento, L.A. to the Grand Canyon), but it never operated from Los Angeles to nearby San Diego until June 1st, 2008. Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in May 1927, the Northern has been cut-off the train in preparation of wying it for the return trip later that day. While San Diego's skyline has changed radically since 3751 was last in town, the old Santa Fe passenger station retains its distinctive mission-styling and remains relatively the same as in the steam days.
