In '79 during a traffic surge resulting in a power shortage Santa Fe leased perhaps it's first ever power bringing foreign power to the west coast in the form of units from NW Chessie System and CN as well as eventual units from SP. Here Chicago to Los Angeles train 188 is struggling up the east side of Cajon Pass at Hesperia with only two of it's three units working.
